It's time to dig your hat out.
Hats on or no playing outside for you!

Literacy
Due to the last two weeks being full of end of year testing we will be completing writing mini-lessons this week. We are also continuing with our novel study and completing our chapter responses and chapter reviews before working on our projects.
Well done to everyone that managed to gather sponsorship for the Readathon.
THE MONEY IS DUE BY THURSDAY THIS WEEK.

Maths
FIBONACCI and ARCHIMEDES are learning about BEMA: order of operations.
Years ago we would have known this as BEDMAS.  We started last week with the instructional lessons so this week will be consolidating our learning.
Please continue to support your child in their basic fact knowledge. There are many websites on the blog that are helpful for this or a simple pack of cards can be a great tool.
Put down two cards and ask them to add or multiply the numbers.
EINSTEIN, NEWTON and PYTHAGORUS will be starting their exploration of weight this week. We will be looking at what things weigh and using our basic fact knowledge to help us understand the relationship between grams and kilos, kilos and tonnes.
Inquiry
Students are continuing with their group powerpoint slide based on a simple machine. They are to add to their slide what the simple machine is, what it does and how it works, along with a diagram and a short (no longer than 3 min) video clip.
Talk to your child about what they have chosen? Ask them questions to get them thinking.

Week 3

It's time to dig your hat out.
Hats on or no playing outside for you!

Literacy
We will be refreshing our memories and looking at persuasive texts this week. Students will be writing a persuasive text on the topic: Is it okay to steal?  They will need to use the structure and language appropriate to this style of writing while remembering to include the correct punctuation.  We are still looking at summarising what we read and doing as much reading as possible to add to our readathon miles.

Maths
This week we are moving on to different areas of measurement. Some groups are starting with temperature and others looking at weight.
Please continue to support your child in their basic fact knowledge. There are many websites on the blog that are helpful for this or a simple pack of cards can be a great tool. Put down two cards and ask them to add or multiply the numbers.

Inquiry
Students are starting their week with their last rotation on FRICTION. Once they have done this they will be able to choose one of the four main workshops and do their own research further into that topic. They are: friction, magnetism, buoyancy and air resistance. Talk to your child about what they have chosen and why?  Ask them questions to get them thinking.

Week 2
Coming up this week
Monday - READATHON begins, Library
Tuesday - P.E
Wednesday - P.E
Thursday - P.E
Friday - Mufti day and variety bash (info below).

Literacy
We are continuing with our novel studies and focussing on summarising in our small group work. Don't forget that all of the reading mileage you are doing needs to be recorded on your readathon doc so it counts towards your total hours.  In our writing we will be focussing on writing a clear beginning, middle and end in our stories.

Maths
This term we will be looking into all the different aspects of measurement.  We are starting off  by having a look at time: analogue, digital and 24 hour clocks.  Please continue to support your child in their basic fact knowledge. There are many websites on the blog that are helpful for this or a simple pack of cards can be a great tool. Put down two cards and ask them to add or multiply the numbers.

Inquiry
This week we are starting our inquiry rotation with the other classes in the Karekare team. Our first session we will be investigating buoyancy. What causes some things to float and some to sink? How does a huge ship stay on top of the water, but a small toy car sink to the bottom?  Once we have done some experimenting the students will move on to looking at magnetism, then air resistance and friction. After the students have had workshops on these areas of forces and motion they will choose one area that they take a particular liking to and research it further.

Welcome Back to Term 4

We are so glad to see all of your faces returning today ready to get stuck into our last term of learning for this year.  We are looking forward to watching you reach some of your goals and are here to support you every step of the way!

We are very happy to share that our school's ERO report has been confirmed and is available for all to read over.

Literacy
This term all students are doing a NOVEL STUDY. They have been given their books today and have already started reading. It is important for their work in class that they are making progress through their novels. This will also help them with filling in their readathon time sheets. These are on devices and they need to keep track of how long they are reading for.

Inquiry
We are starting a new inquiry this term and the students will spend the first week looking at the very basics. We will be doing a rotation with the rest of the Karekare team to learn about the main aspects of forces and motion.
